The Return of the Curated Store at Canvas + Clothier

In New York’s Hudson Valley, a new kind of retail experience a type of micro department store brings fashion and modern living back into focus. There is a certain romance to the department store the discovery, the architecture, the unexpected encounter with something you didn’t know you were looking for. Canvas + Clothier is reimagining that Idea.

Set inside a light-filled former social club at 27 Garden Street in Poughkeepsie, the destination feels removed from the transactional nature of retail. Coffee drifts from the café. Textiles invite a closer look. Clothing hangs alongside objects for the home. Everything feels considered and quietly luxurious.

Founded by longtime retail collaborators and designers MaryVaughn Williams of Hudson Clothier and Jillian Kaufman Grano of Utility Canvas, Canvas + Clothier is an intimate interpretation of the grand American department store built on craftsmanship and discovery.

The store’s philosophy is simple hard-working clothing for women and men. Hard-working interiors for creative living.

Across two floors, Williams and Grano curate raw denim, chore jackets, beautifully constructed wardrobe staples, domestically woven linens, handcrafted tabletop pieces, and objects designed to become more personal with time.

There is no pressure to consume. Instead, there is an invitation to curate.

Williams and Grano grew up with the magic of New York retail institutions such as Henri Bendel, where shopping was as much about culture and inspiration as it was about the merchandise. Canvas + Clothier captures that spirit while stripping away the excess. The result is something closer to a cultural salon than a conventional store. Upstairs, an intimate gallery hosts workshops centered around traditional and contemporary craft, from weaving and hand embroidery to upcycling. Outside, a weekly farm market extends the experience into the neighborhood.

Fashion, food, design, craft, and community exist under one roof, and that convergence feels very much of the moment.

It is a distinctly modern expression of luxury: local, intentional, beautifully made, and deeply connected to place.

Because the next chapter of fashion may not be about having more. It may be about knowing more about where something was made, who made it, why it matters, and whether it deserves a place in your life.

Canvas + Clothier makes a compelling case for that future.
