Is AI Becoming Your New Personal Stylist? Nordstrom and Others Are Changing the Online Shopping Experience

The online shopping experience is getting a major makeover this holiday season, and ai is taking the stage. Stores are moving beyond basic product recommendations and using AI-powered styling tools to help shoppers put together complete looks, discover new pieces, and shop with greater confidence.

Nordstrom is rolling out AI outfit-building within its mobile app. This allows shoppers to see how pieces work together in real time, whether it's finding the perfect boots to pair with a dress or adding a jacket to complete an outfit. For those who still prefer a human touch, access to Nordstrom's personal stylists remains part of the experience. Obviously there's more behind this shift than convenience. Brands know that helping customers style an entire look can mean bigger shopping carts, stronger customer loyalty, and potentially fewer returns. When shoppers can visualize how pieces work together before purchasing, they're more likely to buy.

Nordstrom isn't alone. Target, Walmart, and Amazon are also investing in AI shopping for the holiday season. Target is looking at conversational shopping tools, including its Ask Target assistant, along with trend-prediction to help shoppers discover products and put together looks. Amazon is bringing AI into the styling conversation, allowing customers to ask everyday questions like, "What should I wear to a winter wedding?" and receive curated recommendations.

Meanwhile, fashion retailers like Zara and ASOS are embracing visual search and augmented reality. These technologies allow shoppers to upload inspiration photos, discover similar styles, and explore virtual try-on experiences.

The bigger picture? Retailers are working to recreate something shoppers have traditionally loved about visiting a store: having someone help pull together the perfect outfit. Only now, that experience is moving into the digital dressing room.
